GLACIER SPECTACLE IN SÖLDEN

Friday, 15 April 2011

A truly avant-garde theater play will be performed once again on Sölden's scenic Rettenbach glacier stage, showing the historical crossing of the Alps of the Carthaginian army on their way to Rome in a modern setting. Snow-grooming machines act as elephants. Skiers, climbers and parachutists are modern warriors. Riders cross the glacier fields on their skidoos while flight acrobats try to hinder them. Additionally, the entire spectacle features varied light effects, music, video and pyrotechnical shows.

Nature Arena at Rettenbach Glacier

The performance of "HANNIBAL - The Crossing of the Alps" is all about the historical facts of the Second Punic War and its protagonist Hannibal, who is described in a biographical way with all modern theater settings on a wonderful open-air stage.

At some 3000 meters above sea level the audience is warmly invited to follow this outstanding epic poem in authentic locations. The mighty Rettenbach Glacier - towering high above Sölden - makes a perfect Nature Arena for no less than 500 actors and assistants who try to exceed the successful performances of the last years.

HANNIBAL'S HISTORY

In 218 BC Hannibal crossed the main Alpine ridge in southern direction within only 10 days, accompanied by a mighty army of 60,000 Africans, Celts and Spanish warriors, thousands of horses and 37 elephants.
