HISTORICAL FACTS

The wide open Längenfeld basin was very probably filled with water until approximately 900 A.D. as a well-preserved prehistoric bullaun stone was found in this area.

The history of Längenfeld's "Badl" Bath and its healing spring dates back to the 16th century

The inhabitants of the valley realized very early that Längenfeld's sulfur spring had healing and soothing effects. That was the reason why a simple "farmer's bath" was built, which became renowned all over the region and abroad.

In 1864 the priest Adolf Trientl found several warm sulfur springs at some 2.5 hours walking distance from Gries in Sulztal. In the surroundings of Amberger Hütte a mystic sulfur lake was detected and some researchers explored the area. The warmest spring discovered by Trientl had an average yearly temperature of 18 degree Celsius and was very rich in sulfur while the sulfur lake itself reached already 19.5 degrees. Only a small chapel and a wooden bath house with tubs and some rooms were built next to the spring in 1875. The only 12 degree warm water was heated in a giant walled cauldron, the warm water was carried in bucketfuls to the tubs. On 05 November 1875 the wooden bath house of Längenfeld was completely destroyed by a fire.

In 1893 a comfortable Spa Hotel (42 rooms, 65 beds) was built instead of the farmer's bath. Varied health treatments were on the program: water cures, milk and whey treatments, physical therapies, massages, etc. Until World War II the Längenfeld Spa Bath and climatic health resort reached its peak.

In the Sixties: In the course of irrigation projects the healing spring disappeared in the sixties. The spa hotel was closed and pulled down completely in 1980. Also the brand name Längenfeld Spa Bath disappeared. Only a few years later, in 1986, new plans were made in order to preserve Längenfeld's bathing tradition and to reopen the healing spring. A quite difficult job: the first trial drills were made up to 20 meters, then 120 meters and later even 900 meters – without satisfying results. Another deep drill of no less than 1865 meters brought the expected success. Eleven years later, in 1997, they finally found the 68-degree hot water source which still had a surface temperature of 37 degrees.

At the beginning, the sodium chloride sulfate thermal spa water - which was soon officially accepted as healing spring – was collected in a small natural bath area at the edge of Längenfeld. It consisted only of a small pool and a log cabin as changing room. Very soon the bath was a highlight among locals and guests. On some days 300 persons visited the place and its healing spring water (37-39 degree Celsius) – even in the winter months. Especially skiers and sports fans enjoyed the natural pool to relax their sore muscles. The idea was born to combine different elements with a single spa bath: hiking & thermal spa, nature & thermal spa. The project "AQUA DOME - Tirol Therme Längenfeld" was kicked-off.
